History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi Wiki

The Apachai Flashback Arc is the ninth arc in the Kenichi: History's Mightiest Discple manga series.

Story[]

Looking for someone to play Othello with, Apacahi spots the Elder carrying an ink painting which the latter tries to hide. Meanwhile, Kenichi does Miu's chores as an apology for forgetting to tell her that Ryōzanpaku could adopt the kitten. He finds out about the Elder's painting, which was expensive, and threatens to tell Miu. The Elder quickly resorts to begging, but Kenichi doesn't budge until he proposes to tell how he met Apachai, also telling him its related to the painting. Intrigued, Kenichi offers to avoid telling Miu if the Elder can give him a good reason in his story. Back when Miu was a child, Hayato and Miu came to help dying village that had no children. After confirming Hayoto's identity with a failed ambush, the villagers paid him with what little they could and begged for his help to stop drugs and weapons smugglers that took their children, planning to sell them to foreign countries. Hayato refused the money but took the job anyway. The villagers warned the elder that the smugglers had superhuman bodyguard called Apachai Hopachai working under them.

Hayato and Miu found the pier the smugglers were based at and saved a child from being abducted from two of them. While Hayato left to investigate the pier Miu waited by a tree to have lunch. There, she encountered a cloaked man and shared her food with him, who in turn shared it with several animals attracted to him. However, the man was callled away by the smugglers, revealing his identity as Apachai. On the smugglers' ship, their leader Gusco prepared to leave after confirming they took all the money and children from the village, unaware he is being spied on from a distance by Hayato. That night, Hayato snuck into the pier to rescue the children and Miu secretly followed to find Apachai, believing from their encounter he wasn't a bad person. Hayato ran across the water to board the ship and defeated many smugglers, who called in Apachai out of desperation.

As Hayato clashed with Apachai, their battle destroyed the smuggler's merchandise and threatened to break apart the ship. Meanwhile, Miu stowed away on one of the smuggler's boats hoping to board the ship and rescued the kidnapped children. After getting onboard, she was quickly found by some smugglers but easily beat them and threated them to reveal where the children were being kept. However, the rest of the smugglers used the children as hostages to force her to surrender, and she was captured. When Hayato begins to over Apachai, Gusco order the smugglers to shoot at them both, not caring if he hit Apachai, but the two deflected the bullets while fighting. Hayato created a shockwave to stun the smugglers and asked Apachai why he was helping them. Before Apachai could answer, Gusco held Miu at gunpoint.

Apachai plead with Gusco not to hurt Miu, but the latter ignored him. Hayato revealed that he learned through their fight Apachai was a good person and asked him again why he was helping the smugglers. Apachai answers that he was indebted to Gusco after gave him food while he was starving on the streets of Thailand, then asked Gusco what he planed to do with the children. Gusco lied that he was taking the children to an amusement park, but Apachai saw through his lies. Miu pleads Apachai to help, prompting Gusco to strike her. However, in the brief second he hit Miu, Hayato got close and held Gusco at gunpoint with his own weapon while Apachai defeated the smugglers threatening the children. Hayato declared Gusco is beyond redemption and must disappear, but instead of killing him, he used the Shockwave of Forgetfulness on him. The ship began sinking from all the damage it took and Hayata and Apachai rescued the children while the rest of the smugglers fled. Afterward, Gusco was found adrift by his men, but he woke up with no memory of who he was. Kenichi interrupts the story, believing a technique that could erase memories doesn't exist, and asks why Hayato didn't just hand Gusco over to the authorities. Hayato explained that Gusco likely could have bought his way out of prison and was so terrible that not even the death sentence wouldn't have been enough to pay for his crimes, so he erased all his thoughts of crime and evil as an alternative. Four days later, the children were returned to the village, and Hayato gave them the smuggler's treasure that they salvaged so they could hire proper protection. With the village's money problems solved, Hayato took original amount offered to them, finding it far more valuable than the salved treasure because it contained their gratitude. Apachai started following them and ended up all the way from Thailand to Ryōzanpaku and was welcomed there. Back to the present, Kenichi points out the story had nothing to do with the ink painting and refuses to believe the Elder's claim that he thought about the painting while fighting Apachai. Kenichi tries to tell Miu about the painting, but the Elder uses the Shockwave of Forgetfulness to make him forget about his spending.
